MPR secure acquittal of amateur boxer on attempted murder

  • Posted

We acted for an amateur boxer charged with attempted murder of his sparring partner in Surrey. The trial took place at Guildford Crown Court under Covid19 restrictions and lasted 2 weeks.

The incident arose from an unofficial sparring match in a local Surrey park and racy call-outs between the two boxers on Instagram.

The victim suffered life threatening injuries as a result of a stabbing. Our client ran the defence of self-defence and no intention to kill or cause very serious harm. It was a complex case involving the instruction of forensic experts and a forensic pathologist to comment on the nature of the injuries versus the weapon used and degree and angle of force required. A large part of the Prosecution case also centred around the use of social media and posts made on Insta and What’s App group messages and chats to prove the client’s intentions and motives. This also included drill music and lyrics of famous rappers.

We called several live defence witnesses two of whom gave evidence remotely by video link.

Seema Parikh instructed Ellis Sareen from Foundry Chambers to defend this client’s case. At MPR solicitors we like to match clients to barristers and in this case we felt Ellis was the best fit for the client and his family. We also tend to work only with barristers that we have been able to assess ourselves and are sure of their experience and expertise. Ellis is a very talented senior barrister who has the ability to take on serious and complex cases without the need to instruct a QC.

At MPR solicitors we offer a personalised and tailored service to suit the needs of each client. We like to work as a team with our clients and their families. We treat clients with the dignity they deserve and do not take matters for granted.

Our Serious and Complex Crime Team have the expertise to defend all serious allegations resulting from complex sets of facts and trawling through thousands of pages of case papers and digital evidence. We have long and established links with some of the best barristers’ sets of chambers and connections with many experts spanning the spectrum of disciplines from facial mapping experts to cell site analysis.
